Over the past few years, Facebook has established itself as one of the most important platforms for digital marketing, and more and more businesses want a share of the visibility it offers. However, while companies are directing an ever-increasing share of their resources towards this top social media platform, it seems that Facebook itself is not resting on its laurels.

Did Facebook change its algorithms?

Brands and media houses have noticed a 20% drop in attention paid to posts once they were broadcast in January, according to a BuzzSumo study. No one can say with absolute certainty the reason for this drop in attention, but many different theories have been put forward.

It is possible, even likely, that Facebook has changed its algorithms to favor more entertaining content and give less attention to posts that drive brand traffic. 

Video posts seem to have received a lot more attention. Such a change would be understandable, as Facebook naturally wants to keep people on its platform for as much of their online time as possible.

From the point of view of a business marketing on Facebook, however, this change does not look very rosy. It forces them to spend more money advertising their posts if they want to achieve the desired visibility. 

Of course, the quality of content also matters a great deal. By adapting to the changes, Facebook has made brands adapt to changes in the way their marketing works.

Increased user recognition

Another possible reason for the decline in attention to brands’ posts may lie with Facebook users. 

The more brands try to get sales content in front of people, the more critical public attitudes towards advertising become. The reason brands aren’t getting the attention they once got on Facebook is because people are getting bored of brand posts flooding their news feeds. 

Brands need to respond to this reaction with content that adds at least some value to consumers to find the ads interesting and relevant.

Facebook remains important

Despite all this, it is virtually certain that Facebook will remain one of the most important channels for digital marketing in the future. 

Content is an essential component of achieving the desired results. But deciding what type of content to use is a challenge many brands will face. Meeting this challenge is also the task of digital marketing agencies. 

We need to know the channel that most of our customers use and produce content for them that will be seen in the best possible way.
